What Is ISO 27001?
The ISO 27001 standard governs data in all its forms: written, digital, and even in the minds of employees. The standard specifies a framework for an information security management system (ISMS).
While most organizations apply data security measures to specific situations, an ISMS creates a unified set of policies and procedures, and ensures they are applied and enforced consistently.
ISO 27001 lays out a six-step process for designing, implementing, and improving an information security management system:
- Define a security policy.
- Define the scope of the ISMS.
- Conduct a risk assessment.
- Manage identified risks.
- Select control objectives and controls to be implemented.
- Prepare a statement of applicability.
